One of the more popular careers in law is the criminal lawyer. This is because unlike other careers in law, criminal law allows you to start on one side, and move to a more lucrative side after you’ve put your time in and have the proper experience. Criminal lawyers either prosecute or defend individuals or companies who have been accused of committing criminal offenses. Criminal lawyers are also permanently employed by government entities to be public defenders for those who can not afford to hire legal counsel. Some of these public defenders make their way to become prosecutors, assistant district attorneys or even district attorneys themselves. A district attorney (DA) is an appointed or elected official who is responsible for prosecuting people accused of crimes in a particular district.
Many fresh graduates seeking to gain early courtroom experience or to establish a reputation for themselves become criminal defense lawyers. But before this is done, aspirants must complete four years of undergraduate education or pre-law then undergo law school for three years after completing or passing the Law School Admission Test or LSAT. After that aspirants create their own resumes, or order them on cv writing websites. The responsibilities and duties of a district attorney is complex. He or she is usually supported by a large staff which includes other qualified lawyers, researchers, legal assistants, or paralegals, and so forth. A district attorney also decides whether or not has probable cause and should go to trial. Law enforcement agencies often present the district attorney evidence which strongly suggests that someone is guilty of a particular crime. If the DA thinks that the evidence is strong and it will hold up in court, he or she will charge the suspect and bring him or her to trial and then lead the team of prosecutors who attempt to get a conviction. There are different approaches used by different jurisdictions to provide legal counsel for defendants that do not have the financial capability to hire private practitioners. In most states, the publicly funded public defender office provides the indigent accused legal counsel. Public defenders are salaried government employees. While many don’t put this on the top of their careers in law list, they realize quickly that the experience that can be had in a very short time may make it worthwhile after all. There are also Legal Aid Societies that provide criminal defense services to indigents. For operational expenditure, they rely on indirect sources of public funding and charitable contributions.
